Книга индийского автора посвящённого разбору фактов сообщаемым греческим дипломатом и географом Мегасфеном (IV-III век до н.э.) о Древней Индии. Сочинение Мегасфена до наших дней не дошло, его фрагменты были использованы древними писателями: Диодором, Плинием, Аррианом, Страбоном. Проводится сопоставление некоторых обстоятельств со сведениями древне-индийских произведений, как Артхашастра. В научном плане ничего особо познавательного книга из себя не представляет: простой перебор и сопоставление фактов.
Needless to say that the account of Megasthenes as a source for the early period of Indian History is of unique importance. It helps us to bridge over a long period between the Epic and the Mauryan age. Unfortunately a substantial part of Megasthenes’ work has perished and what little lias survived of exists in fragmentary form only. But it may be said with credit that whatsoever of it we have, is of immense help to us to reconstruct history. Through the pages of this book I have endeavoured to pen down what Megasthenes has said about India, regardless of the fact that there is limited material on the subject. In dealing with the subject I have tried to be within limits of the subject proper but wherever the account seems to be incomplete I have quoted the works of other contemporary Greek writers. In the second chapter of this book I have given on account of Indian rivers and chapter third is wholly devoted to the description of Indian races. For the identification of these rivers and races I have depended upon the identification of J. W. McCrindle
