This book provides model-based solutions to various battery management problems, including battery impedance estimation, battery capacity estimation, state of charge estimation, state of health estimation, battery thermal management, and optimal charging algorithms. The book introduces important battery management problems in a modularized fashion, decoupling each battery management problem from others as much as possible, allowing you to focus on understanding a particular topic rather than having to understand all aspects of a battery management system. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) of a battery has a monotonically increasing relationship to its SOC. Using this relationship, the SOC can be computed by measuring the voltage across the battery terminals. This chapter explains how the OCV-SOC relationship is characterized and stored for realtime SOC estimation. This process is referred to as the OCV-SOC characterization or OCV characterization in this book. The OCV characterization is done in laboratories using a scientific-grade battery cycler that is able to maintain precise voltage and current values across the battery terminals.
