Financial services technology and its effect on the field of finance and banking has been of major importance within the last few years. Big data is generally characterized by high volume, velocity, and variety; hence, they often require specific technology and analytical tools, e.g., Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, for transformation into value. The recent advances in data storage, cloud computing, and statistical tools have gradually reduced costs of gathering data, spurring numerous third-party data aggregators and collectors. This gives rise to alternative data that are not from standard statements or reports, or are unstructured in terms of format. While alternative data have been actively explored in computer science and engineering fields (e.g., voice recognition and machine translation), researchers in finance and business economics have only started to devote attention to them in the past decade.
