Андреа Палладио (1508–1580) – одна из ключевых фигур итальянского Возрождения, зодчий, теоретик и знаток античной архитектуры. Пройдя путь от рядового каменотёса до архитектора, он соединил крепкие ремесленные навыки и высокие культурные устремления североитальянских поклонников античной классики, в круг которых был введён гуманистами Дж. Палладианство – особое направление европейского классицизма последующих веков, базой для которого явился трактат «Четыре книги об архитектуре», впервые изданный в Венеции в 1570 году. Претерпев многочисленные переиздания и переводы на иностранные языки, это классическое сочинение сохраняет свою значимость и сегодня, служа не только литературным документом XVI века, но и образцом высокой архитектурной культуры.
