Название: Four Arts of Photography: An Essay in Philosophy Автор: Dominic McIver Lopes Издательство: Wiley Год: 2016 ISBN: 9781119053293 Формат: pdf Страниц: 200 Размер: 1,9 mb Язык: English
This essay uses a little philosophy solicitously to gauge the power of photography as an art. The approach is not philosophy in the standard academic mode, where theoretical analyses are constructed and tested through technically precise (some say tedious) argumentation. Neither is it the kind of philosophy-criticism that draws philosophers, critics, and art lovers to the writing of Richard Wollheim, Arthur Danto, Martha Nussbaum, Alexander Nehamas, or Robert Pippin. Aim of this text is not to argue for a thesis instead to open up and complicate our shared view of photography, counteracting a history of thinking about it from one narrow perspective after another.
• Re-examines the history of art photography through four major photographic movements and with case studies of representative images • Employs a top-down, theory to case approach, as well as a bottom-up, case to theory approach • Advances a new theory regarding the nature of photography that is grounded in technology but doesn’t place it in opposition to painting • Includes commentaries by two leading philosophers of photography, Diarmuid Costello and Cynthia A. Freeland
