To ‘go viking’ was to go on an adventure, a raid or a pirate voyage. So being a Viking wasn’t a nationality; it was a way of life. It wasn’t something you were; it was something you did. Outsiders didn’t generally call them the Vikings, either. The English called them the heathens, the pagans or simply the Danes, while people in the East called them the Rus or the Varangians.
