Edouard Manet was one of the first artists - perhaps the first - whose work can even now be called “modem”, and although he died in 1883 his an has remained contemporary in spirit. Indeed, young artists are again turning to his work for ideas and suggestions related to the integrity of the surface of the canvas, shallow spatial effects, and careful adjustment of color to shape and area.
Today we find it difficult to see why Manet’s an was violently attacked in his own time. His pictorial themes were, in their nature, traditional enough; but even as late as 1894 attempts to place his paintings in French national collections met with resistance.
Two of the pictures reproduced in this book were rejected for the official French Salon of 1863 by the outraged bureaucrats of art. (These two masterpieces, Mlle. Viciorine and Dejeuner sur l'herbe, are now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Louvre, respectively.)
This volume lists more than four hundred works attributed to Manet, plus thirty whose authenticity is in question. Also, as in the other titles in this series, several unusual features will be found, principal among them being an anthology of critical opinion through the years. There is in addition a comprehensive bibliography and index, and a generous selection of colorplates.
