This Handbook is intended as a brief and general introduction to an art collection that contains objects made of nearly every material known to man. There are several hundred thousand of these objects, produced by every race and nationality on earth, and they span a period of time from pre-history to the present moment. Of necessity, therefore, the number of objects chosen for illustration and comment has been highly selective. But it is not the quantity or variety of material that is important. With this publication as a guide, it is hoped that the museum visitor will arrive more easily at that kind of personal experience before the unique work of art, whatever its origins, which enriches one's capacity as a human being.
