Although Canadians are not a war-like people, their entire history has been marked by armed conflict. Force was required to maintain the existence of the original colony of New France. Subsequently, the country became a peripheral battleground of the French and English wars of the eighteenth century as soldiers trained for European warfare battled not only the enemy, but the demanding climate and topography of the Canadian wilderness. Canada has remained a separate political entity on this continent because on two occasions she was defended by her inhabitants and British regulars from American invasion. In later years Canadian soldiers served abroad in four major overseas conflicts and, in the process, carried the country into nationhood.

The aim of this volume is to depict the dress of some of the soldiers who played a significant role in Canada’s development during the past three hundred years. They were French, British, and Canadians; and all made their contribution to the character of this country. Some were regular soldiers, and some were volunteers, the citizens who for so many years made up Canada’s meagre defence force.

The book evolved from a research project, commissioned by the Canadian War Museum to determine the dress of some of Canada’s soldiers.
