On 20 September 1854, the British French and Turkish armies went into action against the Russians on the River Alma in the first battle of the Crimean War. The advanced in a closely packed mass four miles wide, four miles deep and 60,000 strong, wearing military dress of extravagant finery. On 5 and 6 May 1864, in an encounter in the American Civil War, the Confederate and Union armies came to grips in the dense thickets of eastern Virginia, known as the Wilderness and found orderly movements utterly impossible. Within less than ten years a completely new style of warfare had evolved. The Battle of the Alma represented the warfare of Wellington, perhaps even of Marlborough, the fighting of the American Civil War looked forward to the First World War.
