The warship has played an enormous part in the history of the 20th century, and seems set to continue this importance into the foreseeable future.
The ‘warship race’ between Germany and the UK in the first decade of the century was one of the factors that solidified the antagonism between the two countries and thereby helped pave the way to World War I, when Germany sought to use her U-boats to starve the UK to a negotiated settlement, but the UK
used her strength in surface warships more effectively to deny Germany the import of raw materials as well as food, thereby helping to bring Germany to her knees in 1918.
The battleship was eclipsed by a new type of warship, namely the aircraft carrier that played a major role in the defeat of the German submarine threat. Aircraft carriers helped to provide the air power that supported Allied amphibious assaults and, most significantly of all, decided the basic shape of the war between Japan and the USA in the Pacific theatre.
