The Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough were responsible for the design and extensive manufacture of a wide variety of warplanes during the 1914-1918 war, most of which have been covered by our team of DATAFILE authors over the years. Of the varied canon that includes the oft-maligned BE2 and 12 series, the stately FE2B pushers and the RE8, not to mention the outstanding SE5/SE5a fighters, are the RE5 and RE7 reconnaissance biplanes which have been poorly served by past aviation historians. In this unique monograph, J M Bruce corrects that imbalance with an enlarged DATAFILE that describes in great detail the development and operational service of both aircraft with the aid of much hitherto unpublished material along with over 80 rare photos; contemporary factory drawings and a dozen pages of 1:48 and 1:72 scale plans of both types. There are also colour notes to accompany the rear cover profiles. Captain John Aiden Liddell was awarded the VC following an action when his RE5 was badly shot up; despite the frightful damage to his aircraft, and suffering multiple wounds, he managed to nurse the crippled aircraft to a Belgian airfield saving his observer's life. Liddell died of his wounds some time later. Brian Knight's evocative cover painting depicts this dramatic incident which occurred on 31 July 1915.
