The photographic coverage is of a single machine, an A model 87A-2 Kittyhawk Mk 1 that was built in October 1941 for the Royal Air Force and wore their serial of AKAK899. The aircraft was handed over to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in November 1941 and its serial number was changed to 1051 and operated by the RCAF’s 111 Squadron from Patricia Bay in British Columbia. The machine was restored in 1990 to its present superb condition and now wears the fictitious markings of 41-1456, as flown by Colonel Robert L. Scott.

The Yom Kippur War, also known as the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the Fourth Arab-Israeli War, was fought from October 6 to 25, 1973, between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. The war began when the coalition launched a joint surprise attack on Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, which coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Israeli-held Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights respectively, which had been captured and occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War. The conflict led to a near-confrontation between the two nuclear superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, both of whom initiated massive resupply efforts to their allies during the war. | |
