During World War II the United States twill three types of aircraft carriers, the Essex class heavy fleet carriers (CVs). the Independence class light carriers converted from cruisers (CVLs), and "escort" carriers, converted from merchant or tanker hulls (CVI-s). American PT boats served in every theater of operations, from 7 IXvember 1941 to August of 1945. They served in the United States Navy, the British Royal Navy and the RtlMtea Navy. One was even captured by the German Kriegsmarine and used operationally for a short period.
It is claimed that a PT boat (PT-23) shot down the first Japanese aircraft of the war. It was a PT boat (PT-41) that took GEN Douglas Mac Arthur out of Corregidor and it was a PT boat (PT-373) that took him back to the Philippines in 1944.
