The Type 98 was first introduced to the public during the parade on 1 October 1999, marking the 50th Anniverary of the founding of the People's Republic China. While initially confused as the Type 96, further study revealed that the 18 tanks on display during the parade were in fact a member of the Type 80 family of Chinese Main Battle Tanks. Diese Ausfuhrungen werden auch als Panzer IV (lang) bezeichnet, da sie sich von den A bis F1 optisch am eindringlichsten durch ihre lange Kanone unterscheiden. Diese Umrustung war durch das Auftreten der T-34 und KW-1 mit ihrer langeren Kanone und starkeren Panzerung notwendig geworden. Abgesehen von der langeren Kanone gab es bei der F2 gegenuber der F1 kaum Unterschiede. Die Ausfuhrung G zeigte eine nunmehr zweifach durchbrochene Mundungsbremse und bei der spateren Produktion schon Schurzen. Ab H wurde die Kanone um noch weitere 38 cm verlangert (nunmehr L/48 statt der bisher L/43). Auch zusatzliche Panzerplatten am Bug und vor der Fahrerfront wurden obligatorisch. Daneben zeigte sie eine Fliegerabwehrlafette (MG) am Turm und die nunmehr feststehende Antenne wurde an der linken hinteren Ecke der Wanne befestigt. Die letzte Ausfuhrung J ist nur schwer von der H zu unterscheiden, da die nunmehr am Turm weggefallenen Sichtblenden und Pistolenoffnungen durch die Turmschurzen nicht zu erkennen sind. Am sichersten ist sie mit Blick auf das Heck auszumachen: dort fehlt namlich der kleine Auspufftopf fur den Motor zum Schwenken des Turmes. Er war aus Ersparnisgrunden weggefallen. Spatere J zeigten bereits Stutzrollen und Laufrader ohne Gummiauf-lage (Stahlrader). | |
