Василий Васильевич Верещагин был не только один из наиболее известных русских художников-баталистов, но и талантливый литератор, оставивший воспоминания "На войне в Азии и Европе" (1893 г.) и исторические записки о наполеоновском походе в Россию, которые вошли в эту книгу.
