Become a tech-savvy computer user, the beginner-friendly way.

Computers For Seniors For Dummies gives you the confidence you need to connect with friends and explore the internet all from the comfort of your couch. This step-by-step guide walks you through the basics of buying and setting up a computer, working with Windows or Mac, and getting online. With large print and clear figures, you'll learn essential tasks like emailing, browsing the internet, creating and viewing digital photos, and staying safe from hackers and viruses. In no time you'll be shopping online and video calling family from across the country.

This book is specifically written for mature people like you — folks who are relatively new to using a computer and want to discover the basics of buying a computer, working with software, and getting on the Internet. In writing this book, I’ve tried to take into account the types of activities that may interest a 55-plus-year-old who’s discovering the full potential of computers for the first time.

All computers are run by software called an operating system, such as Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS. Because Microsoft Windows–based personal computers (PCs) are the most common type of computer, I am assuming that you have a desktop or laptop PC running Windows. Windows 11 is the latest version, and that’s what I cover in this book. There are also various types of mobile computers available, such as tablets and smartphones, but this book doesn’t cover them. Windows is updated periodically, and each time there are minor feature changes. This book is based on the mid-2024 version of Windows 11. You may encounter minor differences between what you see onscreen and what you read about in this book, but they should not prevent you from getting things done.

For many people, going online may be the major reason to buy a computer. For example, you can use the Internet to check stock quotes, play interactive games with others, shop, and file your taxes. For seniors especially, the Internet can provide a way to stay connected with family and friends located around the country or on the other side of the world via email, instant messaging, or video calling. You can share photos of your grandchildren or connect with others who share your hobbies or interests. But before you begin all those wonderful activities, it helps to understand some basics about the Internet and how it works.

Every day you carry around a wallet full of cash and credit cards, and you take certain measures to protect its contents. Your computer also contains valuable items in the form of data, and it’s just as important that you protect that information from thieves and damage. Some people create damaging programs called viruses specifically designed to get into your computer’s hard drive and destroy or scramble data. Companies may download adware on your computer, which causes pop-up ads to appear, slowing down your computer’s performance. Spyware is another form of malicious software that you may download by clicking a link or opening a file attachment; spyware sits on your computer and tracks your activities, whether for use by a legitimate company in selling products to you or by a criminal element to steal your identity. Ransomware locks down your content so you can’t access it until you pay a ransom. Collectively all these different software-based threats are known as malware. Microsoft Windows includes security features to protect your system and its valuable data. You can use Windows Security tools to protect your computer from malware.
