This book presents a novel approach to design of dialogue systems. Starting with the general idea of creating a machine that behaves like a language expert in conversations with non-native speakers, this book shows how Conversation Analysis can be included in the multidisciplinary research paradigm of Communicative Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (Communicative ICALL), sometimes also referred to as Dialogue-based ICALL. While many other books focus on implementation questions, this book concentrates on the detailed analysis of the specific type of dialogues that should be simulated with an artificial conversation partner. Therefore, a lot of space in this book is dedicated to intensive discussions of multiple examples, and only one chapter focuses on practical advice on a possible implementation.
The research described in this book shows that conversation analysis can effectively model dialogue. Specifically, this work shows that the multidisciplinary field of communicative ICALL may greatly benefit from including Conversation Analysis. As a consequence, this research makes several contributions to the related research disciplines, such as conversation analysis, second-language acquisition, computer-mediated communication, artificial intelligence, and dialogue systems.
Chapter 2 discusses the relevant academic publications in the fields of Computer-Assisted Language Lning including error correction and automated feedback, Conversation Analysis and its potential for Communicative ICALL, learner language and learner corpus research, Natural Language Processing, Dialogue Modelling, the impact of Conversation Analysis on Artificial Intelligence, and last but not least, chatbots and conversational interfaces, their use for SLA and their evaluation methods. The contribution of the present work to each field is also highlighted.
Chapter 10 discusses a practical implementation of the models introduced in Part II of this book. The implementation builds upon an existing open-source chatbot that uses Artificial Intelligence Mark-up Language (AIML) as its main language understanding and generation engine. Besides repair questions discussed in Part II in detail, this chapter addresses other issues, such as input restriction and the chatbot’s individual style.
The book will be of value for researchers and engineers in the areas of computational linguistics, intelligent assistants, and conversational interfaces.
