Thank you for putting your faith in Flutter in Action. This book is about making mobile apps for smart phones. Today, 'smart phones' are just called 'phones', and we hardly every use them to talk. In fact, its estimated that we spend almost 90% of time on mobile devices looking at apps.
That's why Flutter is important. It's the first tool that lets us create applications with native -quality experiences for both major platforms at astonishing speed. We can leverage this tool to be the best mobile developers that we can be. When it comes to software, quality and speed of development are often at odds with other. Flutter challenges this fact of human nature though. Flutter uses a highly productive language and boasts sub-second hot reload in development mode. This means that you can slow down, breath, and write quality code and still produce apps at an amazing velocity.
Flutter in Action teaches you to build awesome, full-featured mobile applications with Flutter. Author Eric Windmill walks with you every step of the way as you build apps that get you coding as you learn. With the engaging hands-on examples, you’ll create a basic user interface, learn about state management, and integrate a database with a Dart web app. You’ll also delve into widgets, styling with themes, animations, handling user input, and more.
First, I’ll introduce all things Flutter. This includes the "who’s, what’s, whys, and hows". How it works, why it’s worth investing in, and the mental model needed to use the SDK. This chapter is largely conceptual, and involves little code. I also devote a chapter to Dart, the programming language that Flutter uses. I like to call Dart "Java Lite". And I mean that in great way. Then, we’ll explore Flutter itself. This chapter uses a simple Flutter example app to explain how Flutter works; both from the perspective of how you write code, as well as some more explanations about how the engine works. By the end of this section, you’ll be set up, comfortable with the SDK, and ready to start building. If I did a good job, you’ll also understand what’s under the hood.
