The rapid growth of the data traffic demands new ways to achieve high-speed wireless links. The backbone networks, data centers, mission-critical applications, as well as end-users sitting in office or home, all require ultra-high throughput and ultra-low latency wireless links. Sophisticated technological advancement and huge bandwidth are required to reduce the latency. Terahertz band, in this regard, has a huge potential to provide these high-capacity links whereaa user can download the file in a few seconds.?
To realize the high-capacity wireless links for future applications, in this book, different aspects of the Terahertz band wireless communication network are presented. This book highlights the Terahertz channel characteristics and modeling, antenna design and beamforming, device characterization, applications, and protocols. It also provides?state-of-the-art knowledge?on different communication aspects of Terahertz communication and techniques to realize the true potential of the Terahertz band for wireless communication.
New frequency bands are being explored for high-?speed links and to fulfill the requirements for Beyond 5th Generation (B5G) networks like ultra-?high throughput and ultra-?low latency. One of the alternatives is millimeter wave bands. Still it is not enough to satisfy the requirements of future B5G wireless communication networks. For example, applications like wireless local area networks, virtual reality devices, data centres, and autonomous vehicles require a data rate up to at least 100 Gbps.
The Terahertz frequency bands (0.1 GHz to 10 THz) is therefore envisioned as a promising candidate for B5G networks. These bands are being used in different applications like imaging, spectroscopy, and wireless communication. Among them, wireless communication is the least explored area, which is currently in heavy demand for B5G communication networks. Currently, the wireless communication research and trials for above 100 GHz links are underway for both indoor and outdoor channels for different transmitter and receiver antenna configurations and polarizations at multiple frequencies. The main experiments for channel modeling are focused on propagation measurements, directional path losses, and penetration losses.
