This second edition is an update of the first publication. Material in the first edition addressed mainly the key physical layer technologies associated with 3GPP release 15, the first release to support 5G. This edition adds descriptions of some of the technological advancements supported in release 16, including integrated access and backhaul (IAB), sidelink communication, NR positioning, operation in unlicensed bands, and multiple transmission points transmission. It also expands upon some of the original material. Finally, to make the book more pedagogically applicable, problems have been added at the end of those chapters where the material lends itself to associated meaningful computational and/or descriptive problems.

As was indicated in the preface of the first edition, the Third Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP’s) Fifth Generation (5G) mobile technology represents a significant advance in capability and applicability over its 4G predecessor, Long-Term Evolution (LTE). That said, it continues on the evolutionary path, in that a number (but not all) of the key technologies that it utilizes are inherited from LTE. The complete 5G-specified system encompasses a wide architecture from the core network to the end user. This text addresses primarily the 5G Physical Layer, and more specifically, those key technologies that facilitate the functioning of the physical layer. The physical layer, as the name implies, embodies those functions related to the physical realization of transmission between a base station and end user equipment. Among the physical layer technologies covered here are digital modulation, channel coding, multi-carrier-based multiple access techniques, multiple antenna techniques including beamforming, and a number of others. Following the presentation of these technologies, a high-level description of 3GPP’s new 5G radio access system known as New Radio (NR) is given, and it is demonstrated how the key technologies presented earlier facilitate the attainment of many of the goals of the NR standards, including very low latency and the transmission of very high-speed data. Because of this very high data rate capability, NR synergistically supports competitive, very high data rate, fixed wireless access (FWA). As there is little to date in textbook literature on 5G FWA, this text addresses this vacuum by devoting the last chapter to a high-level overview and the technical physical layer aspects of this important and expanding wireless application.

Several texts already exist that cover, individually, some of the key technologies addressed in this book, in addition to a multitude of others. No single one, however, as best the author can ascertain, addresses all the physical layer technologies covered here, all of which the author views to be key. Further, most, in general, cover technologies at a level that presupposes that the reader is already familiar with those technologies and seeks a deeper understanding. This book, on the other hand, presupposes only a general technical background in telecommunications and possibly no knowledge of some or all of the specific technologies covered.

The material presented is directed to industry professionals as well as academics. On the industry side, it should prove valuable to engineering managers, system engineers, technicians, and anyone who would benefit from a rounded understanding of the key physical layer technologies of 3GPP’s 5G NR in order to more effectively execute their job. On the academic side, it should provide the upper undergraduate or graduate university student with a useful introduction to the physical layer aspects of 5G NR. As noted above, problems have been added to selected chapters in this edition. Further, there are a number of worked examples throughout. These problems and examples should be of help to those using this material for formal educational purposes.
