Society 5.0 is a human-centered community where integrated systems operate throughout society to secure comfort in all aspects of life, from energy and medical care, to education, work, and leisure. Blockchain technologies enable the streamlining of supply chain processes and information sharing among various industries. This book presents recent research on the adaptation and implementation of Blockchain technologies in supply chain management in Society 5.0. It discusses different applications of Blockchain, its important role in connecting information technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with human lives, the challenges, and the future of supply chain management for societal improvements.
The recent transformation of the information society (Society 4.0) into analytical data-driven society 5.0, the data scientist and industry practitioners are looking for novel decision-making settings in the supply chain (SC) analytics. Most of the data available right now have an overflow of information, unstructured and low in quality. The task of finding the necessary information from this overflowing information and analyzing it is a burden for supply chain analytics. To contribute towards this changing SC dynamics, the current issue focuses on the blockchain solutions for understanding the extent of implementation of society 5.0 in supply chain management. Society 5.0 is a society, where multiple industries are interconnected with focus on interface, security, big data and financial infrastructure. Society 5.0 advocates an ecosystem in which cyberspace and physical space are integrated to support an affluent and h uman-friendly society. Data scientists regard the interconnection of industry and society through information technologies. Blockchain is considered to be at the core of such a cyber ecosystem. Blockchain is an essential component not only of financial transactions but it can overall aid in interconnecting the entire SC. The wave of digitalization in various industries is expected to enable a business model transformation to interconnect industries and solve various social problems, as an outcome of Society 5.0.
Blockchain technologies enable streamlining of SC processes and information sharing among various industries, thereby bringing new business opportunities. Blockchain is a decentralized, distributed database that maintains a continuously growing list of secure data records. Blockchain technology will reduce time and cost while assuring safety in global business transactions. Blockchain allows multiple parties to securely interact with the same universal source of truth. It allows more transparency between supply chain entities for reducing counterfeits, authenticity of information, and reducing conflicts. In these circumstances, blockchain technology opens important avenues to make efficient and fair use of data. In a broader sense, this technology is also referred to as a “ decentralized ledger,” which can involve a large number of unspecified people to contribute to the effective and fair use of data in a decentralized manner. In summary, blockchain is expected to play a significant role in connecting information technology and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things ( IoT), and Big Data with our lives.
The book’s various chapters are expected to support the stakeholders in the implementation of blockchain technologies for making society 5.0 successful. The book chapters will be organized into four parts: ( 1) Introduction to blockchain and society 5.0, ( 2) Barriers in adoption of blockchain technologies in society 5.0, ( 3) Opportunities for implementation of blockchain in society 5.0, and ( 4) Industry applications demonstrating the blockchain in society 5.0.
