This book covers different aspects of Internet of Drones (IoD) including fundamentals in drone design, deployment challenges, and development of applications. It starts with a detailed description of concepts and processes in designing an efficient system, and architecture. It details different applications of IoD and its implementations in smart cities, agriculture, health care, defense, security, logistics, GIS mapping, and so forth. Recent developments in IoD design, application of AI techniques, case studies, and future directions are covered.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has now emerged as a promising technology in a variety of applications. IoT can be used in flying drones to detect, track, and deliver goods and environment surveillance. IoT empowers drones as intelligent, thin devices by utilizing cognitive computing techniques. IoT makes drones a lightweighted flying device by minimizing the use of heavy electrical and mechanical components. A drone connected with IoT resulted in the “Internet of Drones (IoD).” Several potential applications have been developed by researchers in the design of drones using IoT in the literature. Specifically, IoD plays a vital role in the defence department, healthcare monitoring and emergency applications, delivery of goods, sports photography, object movement detection, crowd monitoring and analysis, traffic surveillance, agriculture surveillance, etc. The purpose of this edited book is to cover three important perspectives of the Internet of Drones (IoD): fundamentals in drone design, challenges in IoD deployment, and opportunities in developing real-time applications. This book covers a 360-degree spectrum of different verticals in which drone applications are gaining momentum. The wide variety of topics it presents would offer the readers a good understanding of IoD. The different chapters in the edited book will cover the above three important perspectives in IoD.

An exceptionally large volume of data has to be received and computed for a smooth operation of UAV missions. Any latency or wrong decision will collapse the UAV swarm, eventually ending the purpose of the mission. To compute such large data, AI must be roped in. AI enables the machines to behave like humans through learning, recognizing patterns, decision making, and solving problems. It makes decisions by processing a large amount of complex organized and unorganized data obtained through a network of technologies and sensors, popularly known as the Internet of Drones (IoD). An IoD network helps in the communication and interaction of data with or without human interference. IoD produces a vast amount of data from a swarm of UAV and its sensors. Based on the application, the data may be collected not only from the surface-mounted sensors on the UAV but also from external sources like weather forecast systems, traffic monitoring cameras, surveillance cameras in the streets or buildings, and even from the satellite feeds. These data are analyzed in real time by employing various AI models to predict weather, calamities, accidents, agriculture, medical emergency, forest fire, building fires, and many more. AI models process and call decisions based on this large volume of data within an abbreviated period of time and transmits back to the UAV for smooth operation.

A fundamental component of Industry 5.0 is Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Machine Learning (ML). A UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) has the characteristics of lightweight, low cost, and the capacity to perform low altitude flights without a pilot. These abilities are in addition to the UAV being a duplicate of an airplane, portable, and capable of snapping items on the ground. Operators control the drone from afar, making it operational. Human operators don’t need to be inside the UAV if it’s controlled by a human pilot. Numbers of UAVs are likely to grow soon, according to present projections. UAVs come in numerous varieties, such as those that utilize traditional flight, rotary blade and hybrid Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) technology. But the main elements of a UAV system are networks, aerial relays, and handheld terminals.
