3D Printing: Fundamentals to Emerging Applications discusses the fundamentals of 3D-printing technologies and their emerging applications in many important sectors such as energy, biomedicals, and sensors. Top international authors in their fields cover the fundamentals of 3D-printing technologies for batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, sensors, and biomedical and other emerging applications. They also address current challenges and possible solutions in 3D-printing technologies for advanced applications.
3D-printing technology is rapidly advancing and being used in many emerging areas such as energy and biomedical. The availability of many different 3D-printing technologies allows for fast prototype devices with much- reduced cost. They can be used to print electrodes, energy generation and storage devices, sensors, and devices for biomedical applications. They can print complex 3D devices and can be modified without changing the manufacturing process. However, there are still many challenges and shortcomings which need to be overcome to use this technology on a commercial scale.
The main purpose of this book is to provide fundamentals of 3D-printing technologies, current state-of-the-art knowledge, and their emerging applications in many important sectors such as energy, biomedical, and sensors. This book provides current challenges and possible solutions in 3D-printing technologies for advanced applications. This book covers the fundamentals of 3D-printing technologies for batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, sensors, biomedical, and other emerging applications.
3D printing is a means to rapidly prototype and design complex devices difficult to manufacture using traditional processing. Design and manufacturing of batteries in three dimensions, particularly the electrodes, has significant advantages over traditional 2D manufacturing due to higher areal loading density and shorter ion-diffusion distances. Electrode designs can also be tailored for specific applications and form factors. Carbon materials are easily added to 3D-printing techniques by incorporating a variety of carbon allotropes into printable filaments and inks. The carbon composite printable materials have shown success in extrusion-based 3D printing of battery electrodes. Though Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) has shown the ability to print a full coin cell using multilateral printing for each component of the cell, the poor performance of such a battery limits the applications of the technology. Direct Ink Writing (DIW) has emerged as the most widely used 3D printing technology for battery development, especially with the printing of carbon electrodes. Many examples of DIW carbon-composite electrodes have been demonstrated and the technology shows vast potential in developing next-generation batteries.
