This book presents innovative breakthroughs in operational excellence that can solve the operational issues of smart factories. It illustrates various tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma 4.0 and details their suitability for manufacturing and service systems.

Lean Six Sigma 4.0 for Operational Excellence Under the Industry 4.0 Transformation provides technological advancement in operational excellence and offers a framework to integrate Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0. The book is a guide to dealing with new operational challenges and explains how to use Industrial IoT, Sensors, and AI to collect real-time data on the shop floor. While focusing on developing a toolset for Lean Six Sigma 4.0, this book also presents the enabling factors to adopt Lean Six Sigma 4.0 in the manufacturing and service sectors.

This book provides significant knowledge about how to transform the conventional system into a digital one for operational excellence. It also provides significant coverage of the enablers or drivers of LSS 4.0, obstacles to LSS 4.0 implementation, tools, techniques, and the integration between LSS and I4.0. This book is a comprehensive attempt to sensitize readers to how industry can integrate LSS 4.0 into the existing product run and how LSS 4.0 implementation can be facilitated by comprehending different enablers and barriers. Additionally, the book describes key technologies and tool sets needed to execute a complete LSS 4.0 program. This book also covers the application of LSS 4.0 in different industrial sectors besides manufacturing. This book provides a complete guide, for all the stakeholders of manufacturing, to the different know- how, tools, methods, and key aspects of LSS 4.0. This book is a meticulous attempt by the book editors to encourage industry, managers, policymakers, governments, and human society to look after mother nature through a comprehensive understanding of the different hidden prospects associated with digitally enabled LSS.

LSS has become more technologically capable as manufacturing transforms into a more digitized environment with the development of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies. Consequently, the development of new I4.0 technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and data analytics, as well as augmented and virtual reality, may lead to the emergence of the fourth revolution in LSS, or LSS 4.0. To help the industrial system adopt the idea of “end- of- life,” organizations are employing digital technology in closed loop supply chains to concentrate on the restorative and regenerative aspects. Through the explicit usage of design models, product systems, and material design, these digital technologies ultimately aid in restoration, the removal of the use of hazardous goods, reuse, and the elimination of waste.

Recently, the Industrial IoT (IIoT) has proved its uniqueness by using machinery, cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, and people together to improve the productivity, quality and performance of industrial processes. IIoT has been introduced in various industries, including manufacturing, health, transportation, and utilities, as an operational technology. In IIoT, sensor nodes are deployed in the environment, gathering data from various pieces of equipment to measure them and control them accordingly. In other words, it is the interconnection of devices and their data using internet connection, without the intervention of human- to- human association. Industrial IoT is playing a crucial role over the last decade without linking to LSS. The association between data, and its processing, with IIoT provides more evident and significant results.

The book will help industrial managers, practitioners, and researchers on the path of process improvement in modern-day industries.
