О существовании большого острова близ юго-восточного побережья Африки первыми из европейцев, скорее всего, узнали португальцы из донесения Перу да Ковильяна, путешественника и разведчика, который, в свою очередь, получил эту информацию от арабских торговцев. Первое посещение Мадагаскара европейцем произошло в 1500 году, когда судно португальского мореплавателя Диогу Диаша, направлявшегося в Индию, отклонилось от курса и пристало к острову. В свете важного географического положения Мадагаскара для торговцев пряностями, огибавших всю Африку, на острове пытались установить свои форпосты Франция и Британия. Однако негостеприимный климат и крайне не гостеприимные аборигены делали данную задачу вообще невозможной. | |

Various social animal species have been noted to inhibit aggressive attacks when a conspecific displays submission cues. Blair (1993) has suggested that humans possess a functionally similar mechanism which mediates the suppression of aggression in the context of distress cues. He has suggested that this mechanism is a prerequisite for the development of the moral/conventional distinction; the consistently observed distinction in subject's judgments between moral and conventional transgressions. Psychopaths may lack this violence inhibitor. A causal model is developed showing how the lack of this mechanism would explain the core behavioural symptoms associated with the psychopathic disorder. A prediction of such a causal model would be that psychopaths should fail to make the moral/conventional distinction. This prediction was confirmed. The implication of this finding for other theories of morality is discussed. | |

Первые литературные произведения Евгении Иосифовны появились в дореволюционные годы. Знание языков дало писательнице возможность не только перевести на русский язык многочисленные художественные произведения французской и болгарской литературы, но и помогло ей в работе над историческими повестями. Первая историческая повесть Е.И.Яхниной "Кри-кри", написанная в соавторстве с М. Н. Алейниковым, вышла в 1940 году и неоднократно переиздавалась. В исторической повести "Чердак дядюшки Франсуа" рассказывается об Июльской революции во Франции в 1830 году, которая покончила с монархией Бурбонов.

How people react to this book tells me a lot about them. Vehicles is one of a half-dozen books that changed the way I see the world. It is not a standard science book. Instead, each chapter presents a small but powerful idea; each elaborates on the prior chapters until a view of a world is build (in thought).
I personally think it should be on the list of "anti-intelligent design" books -- it shows you that complex visible behavior may originate from much simpler sources than we usually think. It is not a long book, but it is a big book in it's own way. A must-read for anyone interested in AI, cognitive psychology, animal behavior, or evolutionary behavior. I would love to see a follow-up by the author on what he's learned since then.
