World War I was the finest hour of machine guns. The most intensive and long-lasting artillery preparation could not destroy all enemy machine guns, which, “reviving” with the beginning of the attack, met the attacking fire. The results of the defense fire impact exceeded all prewar expectations. But the defensive’s return artillery fire, too, could not completely prevent the attacker from pulling up his machine guns behind the forward units. So the machine gun that “went into the infantry” became the “king” not only of the “no-man’s stripe” between the trenches, but also of the barricades and advanced trenches, and in fact the entire battlefield. It was precisely the firepower of the machine guns that gave rise to infantry escort artillery, "trench" artillery, tanks, and machine guns in many ways and determined the development of combat aircraft during the war.
