I would like to warmly welcome you to “Taekwondo Patterns: A Guide for Students”. This book was designed specifically help Taekwondo students from around the world on their journey for learning their patterns for belt testing and competition.

During my all my years of training and teaching I discovered that most students found patterns/forms to be the most challenging (even when compared to sparring) as it requires you memorize a large sequence of movements and be able to perform them in front of an audience. In fact I found that it even lead to students not wanting to go for belt testing or even achieving a black belt. And in some cases quitting their training all together out of humiliation of not being able to remember their patterns easily. I did also find that having to perform in front of an audience was what really created more pressure for students when trying to retrieve their patterns from memory.

At the end of the day to solve these issues always came down to the amount of practice time the student was able to invest in their patterns training. In my experience students that trained only 1 to 2 days a week always had problems with memorizing and performing patterns. The students that trained 3 to 6 days regularly generally had no major issues. Some people learn and remember faster than others. It’s just a fact. But not everyone has this gift. Most people require a lot of regular practice to gain any level of mastery and confidence. So some may say the answer is to go to your training classes 3 to 6 days week as I mentioned above. Makes sense right? So just go to Taekwondo class more often and everything will be okay? But herein lies a few major problem. A lot of martial arts schools in general only allow their students to train 2 days a week maximum and the classes are only 30 to 60 minutes each in some cases. Another issue is some schools will jam 30 to 60 students or more in one classroom and have to share 1 instructor. Not much time to give each student the special guidance they need.

Also not every instructor teaches patterns every day. Some instructors tend to focus more on sparring and kicking drills and not test requirements. Some instructors after achieving their black belts stop practicing their patterns and belt requirements and are unable to remember their own test requirements. Seen that one happen too many times. They would say “Tell you what I’ll show you next class, I can’t remember right now it’s been a while. Go get your sparring gear!!” So these variables create many problems for serious students who want to go for belt testing.

So what are your options? Change schools? Private Lessons? Yes these can be good options provided you don’t mind changing schools if one is in area you live in. Or if you can afford private lessons. Or you could make friends with a fellow student who knows their test requirements. But if that fails what else is there? You can either learn from books or video training. I originally made belt testing videos that I sell to my students so they could also learn from me at home on the days they couldn’t come to class or just for extra studying. I started creating these videos back in the VHS video days and then progressed to making DVD videos of the training.
